Laura Mercier Demonstration

This week in our practical lesson we had a demonstration from the Laura Mercier Southampton team. They came in to talk about working in the industry, as well as giving us a step by step guide of how to create a flawless face. They used a wide variety of Laura Mercier products when showing us the look and told us how they would benefit our work and our kit. They also gave us the opportunity to purchase some of their products from them. I thought that this was a really interesting exercise to be part of and really enjoyed the explanations that the team gave us as it added to some of the knowledge that I already had as well as giving me extra tips and advice. They also gave us a tester primer that we could use on ourselves or put into our kits. This was a really nice element of the demonstration as I felt that I could see for myself how some of the Laura Mercier products worked and could be a part of the brand. I have previously used one of the Laura Mercier primers, so it will be nice to compare the two, and it was interesting to hear how the brand felt the products could be used to achieve the best finish.

The tips that they gave us to achieve a flawless face are as follows:

Make sure that the skin is perfectly prepped by cleansing, moisturising and using an eye cream.

Apply a primer to the skin so that the make up applies smoothly and evenly on to the skin, you can choose the primer to match the skin type of your model.

Next apply the correct type and shade of foundation on to your model's skin using your fingers. This is an interesting tip that I learned during this tutorial. I usually apply foundation using a brush or sponge, it was explained to us that the product applies much more naturally onto the skin as the warmth of your fingers helps the product to blend and melt in to the skin creating a more subtle effect.

After your have finished blending the foundation evenly into the skin you can now add a concealer. This is also done with the fingers as, like with the foundation, it achieves a more natural effect. It is important to apply the concealer second to foundation. This is done after as if applied before, product and coverage can be used unnecessarily and can look heavy on the skin.

After applying the desired amount of coverage apply a powder on to the skin, just so that the skin does not feel wet to the touch. You can apply a more finely milled powder onto the skin under the eye area which prevents the make up from looking cake.

They also taught the recently popular trend of strobing. This was done through the use of a radiance primer and highlighting powder.

The radiance primer was applied to the skin in areas that we are wanting to bring forward, such as the tops of the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose and cupid's bow.

They noted that it was important  not to apply the primer onto areas of texture such as pores as the highlighting effect can emphasise these areas which is not what we are trying to achieve.

After applying the primer, a powder highlight was applied to the highlighted areas, and the palette they used was the new Candle Light Glow Palette. This has different shades of highlighter so that different effects can be created on the skin.
