Applying Bald Caps - Technical File

In this week's lesson we learned how to apply bald caps. Although I did not buy a bald cap to practise with, nor do I think I will use on in my final design, I think that it is a good skill to learn and a good process to understand.

  • Clean your model's face.
  • However don't moisturise the skin as it can interfere with the cap, so finish the prepping process with toner.
  • Wet the hair using a spray bottle, and comb it through so that it is smooth, then apply a strong hair gel to the combed through hair.
  • If the hair is below shoulder length, separate it into two and cross the two sections over each other wrapping each section around the opposite side of the head smoothing it down. The aim if to create as round a shape as possible.
  • If the hair is short one section of hair could be enough.
  • Make sure the hair is as close to the head as possible.
  • Don't use any grips or clips to hold the hair down as it will show through.
  • Soap can be used to flatten the baby hairs that may escape from the cap down.
  • Now apply the bald cap, uncut, to the head, with the nose piece over the nose.
  • Don't cut the cap until it is positioned on the head.
  • Apply spirit gum on to the folded back front section of the cap. In industry use only matte spirit gum.
  • Next begin to cut the cap, try to cut as little as possible, start by going around the ear.
  • To trim the back of the cap get your model to tilt their neck forward so that it is outstretched and not bunched up.
  • Make sure the glue goes all around the edges so that it is thoroughly stuck down.
  • Colour the cap, if not already coloured using the supra colour palette.
