Hybrid Humans

The second part of this unit will see me creating my own hybrid human by using prosthetics and special effects. This week we were introduced to the brief as well as given examples of hybrids in the real world.

Hybrids are created by combining two or more elements from separate creatures to make a creative mix of origins. They can be created by science and human manipulation, for example the Sphynx Hairless Cat created between the 1960's and 80's. Different features from cats were chosen selectively and through the use of genetic manipulation created a hairless cat. Other examples of genetic manipulation carried out by humans combining two elements of different creatures is the Liger. This is the combination of a lion and a tiger.

I have been asked to design a creature character to represent a theme of the 'Brave New World' with my inspiration being drawn purely from nature. There needs to be a link between nature and the body. I need to deconstruct, reinvent and present an alternative representation of the cosmetic body. I have to create a believable creature and need to consider a theme as well as a place that my creature has emerged from. I am really looking forward to creating my own hybrid, I really enjoyed the process of creating the sculpture previously and learning how to make and apply the prosthetic pieces. It will be really exciting to be able to create a creature purely from my imagination with little or no boundaries to stick to. As soon as the brief was mentioned I was already thinking about and considering ideas. I look forward to developing and creating my very own creature!
