Technical Folder Evaluation
Prosthetics was a completely new area of make up to study for me, which
is what I found exciting about taking part in this unit. I have found learning
the techniques and methods really interesting as I now feel I have a new skill
that will be very useful in the industry. Learning the formula and methods for
creating prosthetics as well a handling new chemicals and products has been
enjoyable. Using the different silicones and products such as Prozade has been
really helpful and insightful. Before starting this unit I was concerned that
the process would be really complicated, however I have been surprised by its
simplicity as well as how much more easy it is to create a realistic prosthetic
piece. Although it was easier than I expected I was also surprised at how much
I struggled when wanting to create a successful piece. On a number of occasions
my Baldiez layer failed which meant that I had to redo certain pieces, such as
my wound. I however think that it failing made me much better in the long term
as I practised more. I am now much
more confident in my ability to work on a film or TV show where prosthetics need
to be made and applied. I now feel that I have a greater understanding of what
goes on in the industry also. I have enjoyed learning about the health and
safety associated with the creation of prosthetics such as not mixing silicone
A and B together as well as only using Petrolese and Fixing Spray by an open
window. I think that learning these basic skill have made me a better make up
artist as I have had to be careful for my safety, the people around me, as well
as my products. Overall I am really pleased with the new set of skills I have
learned and have surprised myself with how much I have enjoyed the processes
involved in creating prosthetics.

Final Project Evaluation
This Brave
New World Project for me was, for the most part, a challenge. I initially
struggled with the process of creating the prosthetic pieces, and although I
enjoyed the methods and techniques, which I learned, I seemed to struggle when
actually carrying them out. This was seen at first with my failed wound that I
had to recreate and re shoot. By the end and after practise however I think I
have improved greatly. I began researching and thinking about my Brave New
World concept by considering what aspect of nature interested me as well as thinking
of the attributes I wanted to convey about the character I was creating. After
I decided I wanted to work within the aquatic element of nature, I started to
research fish and their characteristics. I wanted to see how fish functioned so
that I could translate my favourite features into my character. I did this by
researching gills, scales, fins and eyes. I also researched fish human hybrids
before I started creating my designs so I could gain inspiration. I also
referenced and researched films and TV shows where fish hybrids feature. I struggled
with creating my make up designs but sorted this by deciding to focus on one
fish. I also had to redo one of my sculptures, which eventually became my most
successful prosthetic. I was also really happy with the application of my
pieces in the assessment, as previously I have struggled with this stage, and
also thought the make up colouring worked really well. Overall I am really
pleased with the way that my character turned out and after initial worry and
stress am happy.
Creating My Hybrid
Today I created my own human hybrid. Before this assessment I was quite nervous about carrying out the creation, I was worried that I would not be able to successfully apply my prosthetics to the skin as well as not be able to create a convincing fish hybrid through my application of make up. However, once I got into the assessment and began applying the prosthetic pieces I began to grow more confident in my ability and chances of creating a realistic hybrid.
I began creating my character by styling the hair. I decided that I would start with the hair so that I could, once prosthetics applied, continue the colour into the hair. I thought it would be easier this way than to apply the make up and then style the hair. I used the Mac Sealing Gel to smooth the hair back which was successful as it made the hair hard meaning that the colour could be applied well. It however didn't keep the wet look for very long so I had to apply a few layers. I think that the hair looked really effective as it was away from the face but did look wet and slippery and fish like.
I then began applying my scale prosthetic to the forehead. I was trying to be gentle with this piece as I was aware that there were a few holes in between the individual scales which could be ripped or damaged easily. Fortunately though I applied this piece quite easily and managed to apply it so that the holes were not obvious and could be covered easily by the make up. After the glueing of the scales I then went on to glue the gills on the either side of my model's face. I was aware that it was important to place them in the same area of each side of the face, therefore I was careful in my application of the first gill so that I was able to line the other one up with it. I wanted them to be placed so that they stretched over both the jawline and the neck, so that it would look like my hybrid is breathing through her neck and into her windpipe. I was pleased with where and how they were applied, I managed to apply them smoothly and straight away, and in the correct even position on the other side of the face. I also had a chance to quickly alter the position of the first one before the glue dried fully. I was careful when doing this to be gentle to avoid ripping the piece. After my pieces were glued I also cut off some of the excess Baldiez that was flapping off the edges, I did this so that the blending process with the alcohol was quicker and easier.
After the sticking I began to blend away the Baldiez layer from my pieces so that I was able to blend them in to the skin and make them look seamless. I blended them in the order that I applied them so began with the scales. Around most of this piece I had a good layer of Baldiez so it fitted into the skin realistically. However, in one edge the Baldiez layer seemed to be very thin or non existent, this meant that this part of the piece did not blend in so well and stood out more from the skin, however it was not that noticeable as the silicone was quite thin at the edges and matched the skin tone of my model. I then started to blend the gills with the alcohol; the layer of Baldiez around each of them was nice and even but thin, this meant that removing it was much easier. The second gill that I applied was the most successful piece that I have ever created, so blending it was quite enjoyable and easy, as the Baldiez was really even. I was really pleased with the way that the gills turned out and think that they looked really realistic on the skin. They are the pieces that I was most worried about but eventually the most successful that I have ever created and applied. I found this one of the most time consuming parts of the whole application process, and I really wanted to make sure that the pieces were blended seamlessly so made sure I was thorough in the blending process.
After I was pleased with the blending I then began to apply my make up to the face. I made sure that I keep referring back to my face chart and the images that I had taken during the practise that I carried out so that I was able to keep it as close to my design as possible. After the successful application of my pieces I was really nervous that I would muck up the whole look with my make up application. However, like with the application of the pieces, as I went on and applied my products I began to be more pleased and confident with the look that I was creating. Like with the blending out of the Baldiez, the blending of the colours was also one of the most lengthy processes. I found that when I applied colour over colour it removed some of the product meaning that I had to keep applying many different layers to get a high level of pigmentation which was one of the more frustrating parts of the process. I am however pleased with how the whole look came together. I think that this went better than the practise, I think this was because I had a finished product at the end. I continued the colours into the hair which made the look much better, and I also continued it down the neck which improved the whole look.
I was also pleased with the way that the styling turned out, and I think the bubble wrap was really effective as it did give the appearance of a scaly fish. Initially I thought that it spoilt the look as it did not look much like scales, however once it was coloured the shapes stood out more and it looked much better. I had initially intended to use a second piece to create a cape like effect. However I thought that it distracted too much from the make up and that the one piece of bubble wrap was enough on its own.
Overall I am really pleased with the way that my hybrid turned out. Before the assessment I was apprehensive as I not had a chance to fully practise the look as a whole and feared that the prosthetics and application might fail. However once I got into the assessment and positive outcomes began I started to really enjoy the application and creating my own creature. It was exciting to see the transformation of my model and my ideas being translated as I had hoped on to her. I just now wish I had looked forward to it rather than feared it!
History Of Human Hybrids
Before looking at creating my own human hybrid I wanted to research the history of hybrids so that I could more fully understand the importance of them throughout history and their importance within society. Hybrids have been around society for thousands of years in the form of mythology and genetic manipulation.
The artist and scholar Pietro Gaietto noted that 'representations of human animal hybrids always have their origins in religion' This shows that hybrids have been prominent for many years of human existence. Hybrids are very prominent in different cultures such as the Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Japanese and Chinese.
Greek Hybrids:
Pan:
Pan was a Greek God, a protector of the wild and goats who offered asylum to any being pursued by a wolf. In mythology it is said that he tried to pursue many nymphs who ran away from him due to his frightening appearance. Pan merges both human and goat features of a goat head, goat hind legs and a human torso. One of the first depictions of Pan is that of a bronze sculpture as well as in a painting on a Biotan Vase.
Sirens:
Sirens are women with bird like bodies who are known for luring sailors to their death by pulling them towards rocks with their enchanting voices and songs. These sirens are said to be the daughters of the river god Achelous.
Egyptian Hybrids:
Anubis:
Anubis is said to be the god that watched over the dead and is the god of embalming. He is said to have three main functions; "he supervised the embalming of bodies, he received the mummy into the tomb, and performed the 'Opening Of The Mouth ceremony' and then conducted the soul in the Field of Celestial Offerings". His appearance is that of a man with a Jackal head. This is my favourite looking hybrid of all of that I researched and I think the combination of the Jackal is actually very beautiful.
Bat:
Bat is a cow goddess associated with upper Egypt, who was originally a deification of the Milky Way. She is rarely shown in Egyptian art, but when she is, is shown as a women with bovine ears and curled horns.
Chinese Hybrids:
Chu Pa-Chieh:
Chu Pa-Chieh is a Chinese pig like god and, like Bat, he is associated with the Milky Way, which in mythology was regarded as a river. Chieh was banished to earth in the form of a pig after he upset the Jade Emperor by getting drunk.
Japanse Hybrids:
Kitsune:
A Kitsune or fox is a Japanese folklore creature that is able to shape shift into a human form. A Kitsune prefers to shape shift into that of a beautiful women, young girl or elderly man.

Re Doing My Gill And My Final Prosthetic Pieces
I decided that I was not happy with one of the gills that I created. I noticed that after I had poured the coloured silicone mixture into the mould air bubbles had formed. I was hoping that these bubbles would not effect the overall outcome of the final prosthetic as they appeared to only be on the top. However as I began removing it from the mould the bubbles began to pop leaving rips and tears in the silicone and the Baldiez layer. This meant that it would be almost impossible to be applied neatly and blend it seamlessly in to the skin. Therefore I decided that I would re do this prosthetic today. I was a bit worried about creating this prosthetic again as it was only a few days before the assessment and I thought that if this one failed then I would not have enough time to re do it again. Luckily however this prosthetic piece has turned out to be the most successful one which I have created throughout this whole unit. I carried out the steps in the same order and in the same way as every other piece that I created but all the steps came together really well. The Baldiez was very smooth and even, and the prosthetic was of a good thickness and colour. I think one of the reasons that it came together better was because I was relaxed while creating it and was in no rush. I was able to take my time and really put effort in to getting it right. When I removed the piece from the mould it came away really easily, far more than usual, and had a good shape to it. Overall I am really pleased that I redid it as at first I was unsure. After today's success part of me wishes that I redid them all!
These are my final prosthetic pieces that I have created for my human hybrid. After repeating my one failed mould I am now pleased with the way that they have all turned out. It also appears that the prosthetic which was worse at the beginning is now the best. I think that they have a good shape and will hopefully create a realistic hybrid for me. I initially struggled with getting the layer of Baldiez even and smooth and in one reasonably unripped piece for application. However after some practise I think that I have improved on this and will be able to apply and blend my prosthetic pieces into the skin well.

Styling My Human Hybrid
When it comes to styling I would like to create an effect of wet looking scaly skin. I also wanted something that I could slightly colour so that I was able to make the look more seamless.
I instantly thought of the idea of bubble wrap which is made up of small air filled circles and actually creates the effect of scales. It also has a shiny surface which creates a wet look. I was thinking of the different ways of applying the bubble wrap to the body to create a fish like effect. I thought that the best way would be to apply it to my model's chest area over a strapless bra or bandeau wrapped loosely around. I didn't want to cover the whole body as I want to cover the chest area with colour to carry the skin texture further down the body. I did however think that I could colour the bubble wrap in certain areas to keep the colour continuity the same.
As well as wrapping the bubble wrap around my models chest I also thought I could add a bubble wrap cape over the shoulders to create a more contemporary feel to my look. I also thought the wrapping could look like fins on the back of my model's shoulders. I was really inspired by the image below where bubble wrap type material is raised above the model's shoulders.
I was initially slightly concerned with how my styling would work. I wanted to think more carefully this time than I have in previous projects, about the styling as I am more aware that normal clothes instantly lose the effect and characterisation of any design which I am trying to create.
Design 1
Design 2
Although I initially thought of the first design as my favourite I now think the design 2 would be the more interesting and exciting stylisation to use. I think that the first design could be too bare and there would be too much smooth skin showing.
